Kausihan - Technical Specialist, Loads and Control

Technical Specialist of WinWinDLocation

Espoo, Finland

What do you do, Kausihan?

My job is to design control logic and calculate the loads faced by the structure for the present and future wind turbines. The created control systems reduce the loads faced by the turbine and at the same time optimize for higher productivity enhancing the turbines.

Describe your journey to this position.

I started by studying Systems and Control at TUDelft, The Netherlands. I graduated with a master degree in Systems and Control. I conducted my final thesis on individual pitch control of large-scale wind turbines with the Energy Research Centre of The Netherlands (ECN). I worked in the wind turbine design group of ECN Wind for one and half years before I got an offer to join WinWinD in the present position, which I took.

What’s best in your work?

The best feeling is to see all your days of computer simulations and tuning come to fruitation in a real turbine. It is not so well-known that without a proper control the turbine will actually fall as it is naturally unstable.  So to see a turbine function without hiccup and produce clean energy is something very nice to see. Also a fact that one more wind turbine means at least one more house using renewable energy and making the world a bit cleaner place really motivates me.

How would you describe WinWinD as an employer?

Working at WinWinD has really enriched my experience. The range of jobs and the freedom provided at the same time the guidance from my line manager has really helped me settle in quickly. The knowledge I have gained and the career path that is open to me is second to none. The people at WinWinD have actually made my experience very valuable.

Moritz - Technical Specialist, Structural Analysis

Technical Specialist MoritzLocation

Espoo, Finland

What do you do, Moritz?

I am responsible for the load carrying structure within the nacelle like cast components, bearings and bolted connections. As a team we analyse the structural behaviour of the components and are therefore able to give the design engineers valuable feedback especially in the concept design phase. Dealing with strength related questions in manufacturing and assembling is also part of the job. Furthermore, I support the purchasing department as being technical contact with some suppliers to make sure that the delivered goods match our demands given in the specifications.

Describe your journey to this position.

I studied Aircraft Engineering in Aachen, Germany and graduated in summer 2006. After graduation, I worked for almost two years at the durability department of a big car manufacturer in South Germany. I started at WinWinD in February 2008 and was immediately involved in the certification process for the WWD-1 wind turbine. At that time, we were a small team in the office in Helsinki and so it happened that I carried out manifold different Engineering tasks. This gave me the chance of getting to know the turbine in all its complexity of which I benefit nowadays a lot.

What’s best in your work?

The possibility to contribute to new developments and ideas in a motivated and flexible team is great. One can watch how ideas literally materialize. I enjoy the perfect balance of connecting the theoretical knowledge with the actual product development. It is, of course, a good feeling to be a small part in making the world a better place.

How would you describe WinWinD as an employer?

I consider the very international and friendly atmosphere at WinWinD as unique. As a foreigner, I always had the feeling of being fully integrated and openly approached. This made it very easy to adapt to a new country and work culture. I really appreciate the freedom and confidence which has been granted by my superior and allows me to
enhance my personal and professional skills.

Taru - Project Documentation Specialist

Project Documentation Specialist TaruLocation

Oulu, Finland

What do you do, Taru?

The amount of documents needed and produced in a wind turbine or wind park delivery project is quite large. I'm currently in charge of project documentation, ensuring that correct documents reach correct recipients at the right time. I'm also responsible for customer documentation. Naturally, I'm not creating all of the documentation myself, but making sure that documents are filled in and archived correctly. I'm keeping an eye on documentation quality as well. Basically all tasks related to project documentation have my name on them. In addition, I publish news on delivery projects in our intranet and busy myself in other Project Management team-related tasks.

Describe your journey to this position.

I studied English Philology as my major subject and e.g. technical communication as my minor subject at the University of Oulu.  My studies encouraged me to try to find a career in technical communication and I ended up working as a technical writer. My client company happened to be WinWinD, and I immediately felt at home here. I was lucky to get an offer to transfer to WinWinD, and I worked as a Documentation Specialist for over a year. I wrote numerous instructions, created checklists, measurement reports etc. and at the same time learned a lot about our products, processes and different departments. Finally, I transferred to Project Management team and now I'm able to utilise the knowledge I've gained of our turbines, company processes and documentation in general.

What's best in your work?

My job is interesting and variable. Although I do not have a technical background, I've become very keen on wind turbines and wind turbine technology. It is also important for me to know that I am doing my share for sustainable development and thus for a greener future. In addition, the people I work with are a lot of fun. Even though work can sometimes be stressing, my workmates always brighten up the situation. The most rewarding thing, however, is to see the turbines running and know that among many other people I have had some kind of a role in that. So, if I have to name only one thing as best, it must be that my work is anything but boring.

How would you describe WinWinD as an employer?

Our company has grown rapidly and is still rather young as a global player, thus there have been many things to develop or establish. It is possible to do various tasks, take responsibility, and make a difference. I've enjoyed participating in process development and creating new ways of working. I'd say that for an ambitious person like me WinWinD is close to a perfect employer: challenging but flexible, and most importantly motivating.

Bharathesh - Production Manager

Production Manager Bharathesh Location

Vengal, India

What do you do, Bharathesh?

I am responsible for overall execution of blade production. Key functions involve, facilitating the production department with necessary resources, implementing best shop floor practices, production budget planning etc.

Describe your journey to this position.

I started my career in Goa (known for its beautiful beaches) as a production engineer for a FRP boat building organization. Thereafter I had two stints with LM Glasfiber as Executive, Production and Section Head, Production respectively. That apart I also worked in GRP Pipe manufacturing company where I had a pretty good exposure to Filament winding process. After a brief period in Nigeria and RRB Energy Chennai, I joined WinWinD in Feb 2008, as Deputy Manager, Production.

What’s best in your work?

It’s been over 2 years in WinWinD and the journey so far has been interesting. We have a young and energetic team. I get to express my opinions quite freely and that’s a plus. Playing cricket with guys from other departments has gained me a few friends. It has helped me understand my colleagues better; resulting in positive interaction at work. The credit for this initiative largely goes to the People & Culture department. Such initiatives help in building teams.

How would you describe WinWinD as an employer?

WinWinD as an employer has shown immense faith in the RBU team and now it’s our turn to prove that they have made the right choice.
